Destination Spa

Kerala is fast emerging as a luxury spa destination. Exotic spas in the state are a must visit for people looking forward to experience the new wave of spa therapies

The first thing that strikes you about God’s own country, besides its lush greenery and scenic beauty, is the new spa culture, where big brands have created a spa network across Kerala. Every luxury hotel coming up in the state has its own signature spas.

Spas generally offer an extensive list of treatments and remedies which could be based on Ayurveda, aromatic therapy, using medicated herbal oils and exotic herbs, fusion therapy, etc. They also offer slimming programmes, beauty care, stress management and body purification treatments. Most spas have a resident spa therapist or Ayurvedic practitioner, who can be consulted for the best therapies on offer.

“Luxury spas are mostly visited by foreigners and domestic tourists, who come here to experience Ayurveda”, says Dr Aswathi P, Spa Manager, Le Revive. “People from western countries and Middle East are more interested in Ayurvedic spa therapies compared to the local guests walking in”, adds Aswathi. Spa has evolved to become a new trend because the present day life has become very stressful and tiring. In a spa one can spend few hours or a day, rejuvenate oneself to kick start the coming days with a new zest.

“The benefits of visiting a spa are many”, explains Dr Meera Thomas, Ayurvedic doctor based in Calicut. “A spa therapy typically refreshes and Kochi is fast emerging as the new spa destination in Kerala. Sohum spa, at Crowne Plaza, offers the best of oriental therapies such as Thai, Swedish, Balinese, aromatherapy massages, scrubs and masks, besides Ayurvedic healing therapy.

“We provide two specialised spa packages: Sohum signature massage, meant for fitness enthusiasts, is a combination of sports massage and Thai acupressure techniques, and Native American Hot stone, is a unique spiritual ritual, involving warm volcanic stones placed at key energy points on the body. They leave you relaxed and feeling light in body and mind”, reveals Jayaraman Kapparath, Regional Head, Core Wellness Limited (Sohum spa).

On similar lines, Le Revive, the Ayurvedic spa of Le Meridien, offers authentic Ayurvedic spa treatments such as Abhyanga, Shirodhara, Elakizhi, Mukhalepana, etc., to de-stress oneself. The spa has recently initiated three signature treatments- Keshya, an enriching hair treatment, combined with a relaxing neck and shoulder massage, Aanandini, a beneficial de-toxifying massage and Swastha, a combination of Abhyanga and Shirodhara using medicated oils.

“The benefits of visiting a spa are many”, explains Dr Meera Thomas, Ayurvedic doctor based in Calicut. “A spa therapy typically refreshes and rejuvenates one thoroughly. It de-stresses and relaxes the senses, improves health and enhances skin complexion, leaving a feeling of well-being”, adds Meera.

Lucy Suja George, a software professional based in Kochi, could not contain her excitement while sharing her first time spa experience. “The 120 minutes, Ayurvedic massage and scrub, using aromatic oils mixed with sandalwood paste, totally melts away your stress, leaving you completely rejuvenated. It was magical, something I have never experienced before”, says Lucy, who was gifted the spa therapy package on Mother’s day.

If you are one among the many, who are stressed out and bored at work, longing for a break from the monotony of life, treat yourself to a luxurious spa and feel pampered like never before. Indulge and invest in a good spa, to relax and revitalise you and experience a new lease of life.
