Onam celebrations this year is set to take on a different dimension with the arrival of mega malls. Malls in the state are gearing up in a big way to welcome the harvest festival
The festive season has begun in full swing. Fun and excitement is in the air. Exhibitions and sales are brimming in every nook and corner of the city. The incessant rain has not dampened the festive spirits of Malayalis. What makes Onam more special this year is the concept of celebrating onam in mega malls.
The festive season of Onam gets bigger with every passing year and expectations are high this year also. Says K Mathew Luke, general manager, Oberon Edifices & Estates Pvt. Ltd., “We are missing on the festive mood because the school holidays have not yet begun, but it will pick up soon. Every Onam is grand and we are ushering the Onam season.”
“Onam is the biggest season for us. For purchases of Rs. 5000 and above, we also have cash back prizes and assured gifts for shoppers apart from attractive offers and discounts from individual shopping outlets. Hanging pookkalam, onam ‘oonjal’ for public, an artificial garden at the entrance and a huge Mahabali to welcome people into the mall are some of the highlights of the décor,” elaborates Luke.
“We are planning a lot of activities and competitions between 4pm and 8 pm everyday starting from 13 - 22 September,” says Luke. Apart from traditional onam games like uriyadi, ambeyth (shooting), thiruvathirakali, onappattu, pookalam competition, payasam making, painting competition for kids and other open games are also planned for customers. “The main intention is to offer a feel good factor to everybody walking in to the mall, be it for shopping or watching a movie or for time pass,” he adds.
