Agreeing to a long-pending demand of students and teachers, the
government of Kerala decided to implement the five day week in higher
secondary schools in Kerala. This move, as per recommendations of the P O J Labba
Committee, has been welcomed by various teachers’ associations across Kerala.
According to K T Abdul Latheef, state
president, Kerala Higher Secondary Teachers Union, this significant government
move would give students more time for studies as well as extra-curricular
activities. “Teachers and students were mentally stressed out with no
relaxation time due to the six day week. Now we can engage students in other
activities like NSS and NCC during Saturdays,” says P A Antony, commerce
teacher at Santa Cruz HSS, Fort Kochi. Heera Cyril, plus two student at St.
Teresa’s HSS, Ernakulam, is also of the opinion that while it gives more for
students to revise their lessons, it gives ample time to rest for teachers as
well.
