Mother’s Day, let us take better care of our mother’s health and wellbeing. Let's
gift her joy of good health
Mother’s day is here once again to be thankful for the greatest gift of God to mankind- Mothers. It is that special day to pamper and celebrate mothers for what they are and have always been. From do-it-yourself cards to saying-it-with-flowers, children are going all out to make their mothers feel special.
But nothing is more valuable and rewarding than taking care of her health and well-being. Juggling between household chores, profession and family, mothers today hardly find time to lead a healthy lifestyle, let alone take care of their health. It is important to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle to prevent common ailments and worries too.
Mothers, both young and old, need to spend quality time on their health and maintain general fitness. Dr Sanam Basheer, gynaecologist, City Hospital, Kochi agrees. “Middle age is the period where diabetes, hypertension and other medical disorders set in. They should be screened for medical and gynaecological disorder. While new mothers should be encouraged to breast feed, they should also maintain a healthy diet to prevent obesity,” says Basheer.

It is also necessary for mothers to eat healthy and go for periodical health check-ups after the age of 30. must With the rise in breast cancer rates in Kerala, Basheer stresses upon periodical mammogram and pap smear tests for cervical, uterine and breast cancers.
One of the most rewarding gifts one can give on Mother’s Day is the gift of fitness. Signing up for yoga, aerobics or dance classes is a great way to unwind, leading to fitness and wellbeing. “Unlike earlier, more middle aged women are shedding all inhibitions and joining these classes with a focus on maintaining their fitness,” says Rajesh Raj, a fitness expert based in Kochi.
Apart from these fitness mantras to improve the physical health, maintaining good mental and social health is equally important. Rashmi Pradeep, sales professional, based in Kochi, couldn’t agree more. “Most mothers wish to spend quality time with their child, which is a rarity these days. While young mothers should take care of their physical health, we must ensure the mental health of our aged mothers, by spending more time with them and recreating their pass time, etc.,” says Pradeep.
Indulging in their favourite hobbies is also a great way to improve mental health. “I call it the ‘me-time’, which is very important in order to keep your sanity intact,” says Harsha Thachery, mother of a pre-schooler, who unwinds by attending zumba classes twice a week. Surprise her this year with a personalised gift that comes from the heart and make her day extra special.
